Sunday Worship Service
Sunday Service begins in our historic sanctuary at 10:25 a.m., combining a traditional approach to worship with a liberal perspective. Music from our 3,000-pipe organ, a full choir, and professional soloists, compliment and add splendor to each service. On the fourth Sunday of each month we take a less conventional approach to our musical selections and feature a jazz ensemble as a part of our worship service. Communion is offered during worship on the first Sunday of each month; all are invited to participate.
Worship Activities for Children Preschool, Kindergarten, and Elementary school children attend worship through "Time With The Children." At about 10:45 a.m., they are invited to the church school space for stories, classes, and seasonal activities. Middle and High school youth may stay in worship or meet with a teacher for faith discussions.
Worship in March
Pat Ross preaches March 9, 16, and 23. Paul Davis preaches March 30. We welcome Malcolm Boyd as guest preacher on March 2. The jazz band leads the music on March 30.
March 23: Easter comes early this year on March 23rd. We will celebrate this Holy Day with two services. An outdoor service will begin on the arcade at 8:00 a.m. This service will include communion, a sermon, and Easter hymns. It will be followed by a light breakfast including hot cross buns, fruit, and an egg dish. Our 10:25 a.m. service will feature Pat Ross' sermon, "Resur-rection Now", choral music with brass, and the reception of new members.
March 16: On Palm/Passion Sunday, we will welcome Cinnamon the Donkey to our Palm Sunday parade. Then in worship, we read Matthew's version of Jesus' last days in Matthew, Chapters 21, 26 and 27. The homily will be "Faith and Betrayal," preached by Pat Ross.
Holy Week: On Maundy Thursday, March 20, we offer a light supper at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall featuring two soups (one vegan), salads, fruit and bread. Worship begins at 6:45 p.m. and features readings, Taize chants, and the tenebrae ceremony of extinguishing candles in remembrance of Jesus' last days. On Good Friday, March 21, the congregation is invited to join other downtown church members for a noon worship service at First Christian Church, 1315 SW Park Avenue.
March 2: We host the Rev. Malcolm Boyd as our guest preacher. The title of his sermon will be, "Departures and Arrivals." See the article about Malcolm Boyd (starting on page 1) for more about this Episcopal priest.
March 9: The choir sings the beautiful Fauré Requiem with instrumental accompaniment, and Pat Ross' homily will be on Lazarus and Mary from Chapters 11 and 12 of John's Gospel.
March 30: We return to the story of Doubting Thomas in John 20:19-31 and consider what kind of faith is asked of us as Christian disciples. Are our doubts really stumbling blocks to faith or stepping stones along the journeys? Our storyteller, Mary Ann Terpstra, will present the gospel reading, and the jazz band will provide our music. Paul will preach, "Our Doubting."
